2010 Open Source CMS Market Share ReportThe 2010 Open Source CMS Market Share Report concludes that three brands - Joomla!, WordPress, and Drupal - dominate today’s market. The Report concludes that WordPress has taken the lead in brand strength and market share after a strong growth year.

The Report follows the market share and brand strength indicators for 20 top systems, assessing each on a wide variety of traditional and Web 2.0 measures. The study focuses on identifying the market leaders, both in terms of rate of adoption and mindshare.

While WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal lead the survey set across a wide range of measures, the report also identifies other trends in this year's open source CMS market.

** DotNetNuke continues to lead the .NET CMS race, though Umbraco is gaining ground.

** Liferay leads the Java CMS race by a narrow margin.

** Systems to watch include Concrete5 and Umbraco.

The report includes more than 30 exhibits drawn from extensive research and a survey of more then 5,000 users of content management systems.

Thanks for this survey

Ric, thanks a lot for the information you provided with this survey. I republished a little version on my blog and linked back to this page. all the best.

Thank you

Much appreciated. We're going to start the survey for the 2011 Report in jsut a few weeks. If you would like to be included in that, please use the subscription notifications box on the left column.

Your Drupal Stats are Way Off

Which makes me question the accuracy of the rest of the report. Here are the downloads of Drupal core: Version 6.22: 87,530 http://drupal.org/project/usage/1168950 Version 7.22 26,012 http://drupal.org/project/usage/1168946 And the curves are upward on both, not down the 46% you claim. Furthermore, it's a bit unfair to compare WordPress (blogging software that you can just sign up for) to the other more feature-rich products on your list. Doug www.eighthourlunch.com

Direct versus Indirect evidence

Thanks for your feedback, but our Drupal numbers for both of the last two years come directly fron Dries, the founder of Drupal. We find direct information more reliable than the online counters. The sources are footnoted in the report, by the way.

Great Information for School Paper

Hi Ric, Thanks so much for your work on this. I'm finishing up a school paper right now and I'll be using some of the data in here as sources for the project. -Chad W

.NET CMS Downloads

FYI, many people install / download ASP.NET based systems through the Windows Platform Installer. Just an FYI, as those downloads may not be included in the download #'s you have. Especially for Umbraco, that may account for why downloads on the CodePlex site are down. The Platform Installer used to report the number of downloads, but apparently stopped doing that after the latest release.

Indeed a possibility

Granted. Last year (2009) we were able to get our download data directly from Umbraco. This year they were not responsive, so we wound up using the published data. That certainly could account for the difference. All other metrics show Umbraco to be a growing system -- contrary to this stat's trend.

ExpressionEngine missing

Have you guys heard of ExpressionEngine? Seriously... I would like to see the full list of considerations put to the survey not just the top 20.

Yes, we are!

Yes, we are familiar with Expression Engine. It is not eligible for the survey as it is commercial -- it is not open source. The selection criteria and the research methodology are explained in quite a bit of detail in the report.

Good Review but Joomla Template bundle installations missing

Great review of open source CMS market leaders - to see that it will be hard for someone new to step on to the podium. The big three are here to stay... Just a comment regarding the downloads of Joomla, compared to Wordpress. To my experience, most of the Joomla installations are now done by the Template bundle provided by JoomlArt, RocketTheme etc. These installations are not visible in the figures.

Joomla! downloads indicator

Interesting. I wasn't aware very many people used those. (In fact, have never heard of anyone using them.) Will investigate for next year. Thanks for the info!

Thoughts on the survey

Although this seems to be based on number of respondents, this survey seems a little biased toward smaller, non-enterprise solution CMS's. Too bad you didn't get a few more takers in the ASP.NET-based CMS. It would really be great to see B2B propensities. Altogether, thanks for doing the survey.

Sample group

Yes, I agree with you. The survey group is biased towards smaller companies and individuals. I think, however, that in the web content management space that this is a reflection of the market itself -- numerically there are far more SMEs in the WCM market than large firms.

I also agree that a pure B2B or Enterprise Report would be useful (and indeed, something like that may be in the works!)

Thanks for reading.

Very Thorough

We appreciate Water and Stone sharing this report with us. The user questions reported and areas surveyed made for a enlightening read. Mentioning the promotion of the survey by some of those in the survey and other notes that were included were helpful insights for interpreting the results.
